Once upon a time . . . wait, that’s
another story.
This story starts with Lindsey, my daughter. Throughout
high school Lins volunteered at Jungle Adventures, a road side old Florida animal park. She was constantly
surrounded by and working with exotic animals, including snakes. For her high school senior project she
researched animal behavior and then assisted in raising a black bear cub. She was even able to
get the park to bring the cub to her class for her final presentation!
After volunteering at Jungle Adventures for a few years, Lins started pestering me about getting a snake.
Now, while I usually like all animals, I’d only been exposed to the warm blooded, furry kind so I was very hesitant.
Scratch that, I said that there was no way I was letting a slimy snake in our house. My husband
Johnny supported my position 100%.
However,
those of you who are parents know how persistent a kid can be. Lins kept at it (badgering would probably
be a better word to use) for months. She was joined by her fellow volunteer and best friend, Andrew.
Finally a reptile show was coming to Orlando and she convinced us to go and check it out. What harm could come from
walking around for an hour or so? Little did I know that I would be completely intrigued with the snakes
I saw and held over the next four hours. The highlight of our day was seeing baby ball pythons hatching
out of their eggs right there at one of the tables at the show!
While we didn’t buy a snake that day because I didn’t know how to care for or feed them, I went
home and immediately began researching snakes on the internet. After a lot of reading and lurking on forums,
we decided that we would buy a ball python. Ball pythons attracted us because of their size, their beauty
and their docile attitude. We were quickly hooked and one turned into several over the next year or so. Now we have a small
group of hand picked quality ball pythons that we are breeding so we can pass on our love of this snake to others.
We have
found many friends in the business that have helped us over the years. I'd like to specifically thank
Michael Cole at Ballroom Pythons South for his tireless help and time spent educating us as we learned about these
magnificent animals. He is one of the best "good guys" around!
